The Need

In 2007, we received calls representing 1,000 homeless parents and children but were able to accept only 17 single mothers and their 15 children and 1 single father and his 3 daughters into the program. Though not all of these families qualified for our program, this is still a stark indication of the need. The dramatic growth in housing costs, combined with the lack of livable-wage jobs and affordable childcare has resulted in a bleak situation for many.

Learn about the scope of the national problem and ways in which it is being addressed from this link  "Keys: Ending Family Homelessness." The featured video is produced by the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

Our Response

The Bible is clear about how we are to treat those who are less fortunate.

"Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, 'Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead" (James 2:15–17).

"John (the Baptist) answered, 'The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same' " (Luke 3:11).

"The righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me' " (Matthew 25:37–40).

"This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor' " (Zechariah 7:9–10).

"The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow" (Psalm 146:9).

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress" (James 1:27).

"Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow" (Isaiah 1:17).

"Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked" (Psalm 82:3–4).

"Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan" (Exodus 22:22).

"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling" (Psalm 68:5).

(All Scripture is from the New International Version of the Bible.)
